The Front Beach

Teignmouth’s main Front Beach is all about wide horizons, fresh sea air, and classic British seaside charm. It features a sweeping stretch of unique red sand, a historic Victorian pier, and vast views looking straight out into the English Channel. It’s the ideal spot if you want to take a long walk along the promenade, watch the waves roll in, or spend a traditional day out with the family by the open sea.

Front Beach Guidelines & Safety:

To ensure a safe day out for everyone on the sand, please keep these extra seasonal guidelines in mind before heading down:

Seasonal Dog Ban: Dogs are banned on the main resort section (from the Eastcliff slipway down to the Lighthouse at the point) between 1st April and 30th September. They are welcome all winter, and can use the far end toward Holcombe year-round.
Promenade Rules: On the seafront path and around the Den lawns, dogs must be kept on a lead at all times.
Watercraft Exclusion Zones: Jet skis, speedboats, and other powered watercraft are strictly banned from going between the large yellow marker buoys and the shoreline during the summer to protect swimmers. They must use designated launch lanes.
Dog Waste Fines: Leaving dog waste on any part of the beach or promenade carries a £75 fixed penalty notice. Clear dog bins are positioned at all main access points.
Inflatables Warning: Avoid using blow-up dinghies or toy inflatables when there is an offshore wind blowing, as the currents can quickly pull you out into the main shipping lanes.

The Back Beach

If you head through the town’s back lanes to the river side of the peninsula, you hit the Back Beach. Tucked quietly along the Teign Estuary and looking directly across to Shaldon, this side is a completely different world. It’s a bustling, characterful little hub filled with local fishing boats, people crabbing off the structures, and locals grabbing a pint outside the pub. Plus, because it faces west up the river, it gets some of the most spectacular sunsets in Devon. Back Beach Guidelines & Safety:

To ensure a safe day out for everyone on the sand, please keep these extra seasonal guidelines in mind before heading down:

Dogs Allowed Year-Round: Unlike the main resort beach, dogs are completely welcome on the Back Beach all year round with no seasonal restrictions.
No Estuary Swimming: The currents running through the mouth of the Teign Estuary are incredibly fast and unpredictable. Swimming in the river channel or jumping off the back beach pier structures is highly dangerous and strongly advised against.
Shaldon Ferry Access: Keep the landing areas clear for the historic passenger ferry that runs back and forth across the river to Shaldon.
Dog Waste Fines: The £75 fixed penalty notice for leaving dog waste applies here just as strictly as the Front Beach. Please use the bins provided near the harbor entry points.
Working Harbour Etiquette: This is a working beach used by local fishermen and boat owners. Please respect the tied-up boats, nets, and marine equipment left along the shoreline.

The Point Car Park Advantage: Head straight to The Point Car Park to park directly between the Front and Back beaches. It gives you immediate access to both shores without walking across town.
Tide Windows for the Back Beach: Always time your visits to the river side based on the Teignmouth Harbour Tide Tables. High tide is ideal for water sports, but low tide exposes wide sandbanks perfect for crabbing and walking.
Back Beach Conveniences: When spending time on the river side, the closest public amenities are located right on the lower level of The Point Car Park, directly adjacent to the local lifeboat station.
